MESQUITE HISTORIC DISTRICT / MESQUITE MURAL PROJECT / PUBLIC ART / GRAPHICS
June 13, 2005
In the morning we took a tour of the Mesquite district, with Irene and David Chavez giving details of the architecture and the history. Certain houses were pointed out as being typical adobe structures of the original town site. Irene and David related their personal histories of growing up in the area.
We also went to the Dona Ana Health center to show the team a "plywood mosaic" mural that I had directed with three students in 2001-2002. I talked about the significance of a prestigious site and how the two projects differed and how they were comparable.
When we got back to the Court Youth Center, Irene asked the team members to relate of what the tour to Tucson had given them. Their statements can be read on the TUCSON TOUR page.
We continued in the design process. In the afternoon I collected our first set of tiles from the Dal Tile Company.
The results of some of the work today are below.
